Remember your manners -- you are sending messages to many people when you
use the list. Here is an excellent article on how to participate in a list

If the above does not make sense, read on:

Here is the deal: a long long time ago I registered this domain name. I
have done nothing with it until now. At many family events (most recently
John's and Marcy's Wedding) the idea of a web page, online forum, blog,
you name it, has been floated. Being a bit cynical about some things, I
think that the forgoing will be a big effort with a limited amount of
traction. Some would check in with such a site regularly. Most will likely
do it once or twice, and then, when there is not much change, lose
interest.

So -- for now at least, I am offering two things:

1) If anyone of the family would like to take over this site, you can have
free hosting on our server, and you are welcome to build on my painstaking
work. I have struggled with the layout and graphics you see day in and day
out. I doubt that there is anyone in the family that can top what I have
done, but I welcome your attempts. If you succeed, I will pass on the
access information to let you add as much here as you want (first one in
wins (or not), and will have to figure out how to hand the hot potato off
to someone else). We can have family sites (http://www.mostlyc.com/plc
etc.) and on and on. But maintaining that all takes lots of effort, and I
am not up for it right now. So -- anyone want the job?

2) I have set up a list server. You can use the link above to subscribe to
the list. I think this will be a reasonable means to share good news and
bad in a fast and efficient manner, and it will take a minimum of effort
to maintain. I especially like that last part. And those of us not likely
to check in regularly will still know what is going on.

What is a "List Server" you ask (if you did not ask you can stop reading
here)? Depending on the situation, it might be a lot of different things.
I will briefly describe what it is in our setup:
Our list on the list sever is essentially an automated email forwarding
system.
It is a piece of software that allows anyone to "subscribe" to the list.
Once you have "subscribed" to the list, any email messages that are sent
to the "list" will be redirected to your email address (and to everyone
else that has subscribed).

In order to send a message to the list, you need to be a subscriber. If
you have not "subscribed" any messages you send to the list will be
rejected. Once you have subscribed, your messages will be accepted and
forwarded on to all subscribers. Please note: the list server recognizes
your submission, and validates it based on the "from" address of the email
you send. Thus, if you change your email address after subscribing, you
will no longer receive messages sent to the list, nor will you be able to
post to the list unless you update your subscription (by removing you old
address and adding your new address).

I know I only offered to do two things above, but here is a third. It is
not much, but at least it is something. I have created an archive of all
the message that are sent to the list (so far none). Thus, if you are
joining late and want to read the old messages, you can do that. Or if you
remember reading a message a while back, and have deleted it, the messages
will all be in the archive, and you can go there and review or search them.

Who is on the list? Well, essentially there are some things that need to
be kept a secret and this is one of them. The bottom line is that you as a
subscriber have no way of knowing who else is a subscriber (unless they
tell you). Note that at this time all of this is "publicly" accessible.
Meaning that anyone can subscribe. I doubt our family news will be too
interesting to most non-family folks, but remember that anyone might
subscribe or review the archive. So, best not to send out the combination
to family safe with the jewels, or pass on the secret handshake using this
list. Likewise, if you want to be absolutely certain that a message
reaches a particular person, this is not the best tool to use -- you have
no idea if they have subscribed or not! With these caveats in mind, send
away, within reason, news of the family!

How do you send a message to the list? Simple -- just send an email
message form the account that you subscribed to the list from to the list
address:

everyone@mostlyc.com

depending on other work the server has to do, it may take a few minutes or
an hour or even more before your message is forwarded. Usually it will
happen in a few minutes though. If your message is rejected, the server
will send a message to you letting you know that. When you send a message
to the server, it will send it back to you as well as the rest of the
subscribers, and to the archive.
Do you want to share photos with everyone? The server obviously will have
plenty to do to keep track of all the email addresses of the Mostly C's,
and it is working in a similar manner for a number of other groups too.
And, while I expect that the server will grind through almost anything we
throw at it, I prefer to be nice too our computers. So . . . if you would
like to show off the great quality photos that the new digital camera you
bought produces by sharing a dozen or so family snaps at fifty megabytes
each (don't think this is a joke, this is what today's high end camera's
are producing [as of 2005]) PLEASE do not attach them to the message you
send to the list. In most cases the subscribers will not be able to
receive them even if the server pushes them through. I would like to have
a way to share photos, but this is not the way. If you have photos to
share, and you want to use the tools here, please follow these steps:

1) Use some photo editing software to shrink the photo files down to a
reasonable size, for sake of discussion let's call it 200K or less.

2) Send the photos as an attachment to:

archive@mostlyc.com

This will create a new message in the Archive that does not forward to the
list. The archive should accept an email of almost any size -- you can
attach multiple photos to one message if your software/mail system will
allow it.

3) Create an email to the list (everyone@) and tell everyone about your
great new photos, and let them know that they are attachments on the
message in the archive.

Of course you can post the photos on another site, or a photo house, or
wherever, as well, and send a message to the list and let everyone know
that they should take a look over at www.myphotos.com (obviously it would
be best to use your own web address).
